TWO NEW CLASSES! -

Intro to B&W Film Developing
+Saturday August 23rd, 10am-2pm
+Saturday, Sept. 20th, 10am-2pm

(one-day class)

In this class you will learn the basics of black & white developing techniques. You will learn how to properly mix and handle chemistry, how to load your film onto developing reels, as well as proper agitation, rinsing, and drying techniques. You will also create an 8x10 contact sheet of your negatives to take home with you, and learn how to properly store and archive your negatives.

Class size is limited to 5 to ensure you get as much individual attention as you need.

Intro to B&W Darkroom Printing
+Saturday August 30th 10am-1pm, & Sunday August 31st 11am-2pm
+Saturday, Sept. 27th 10am-1pm, & Sunday Sept. 28th 11am-2pm

(two-day class)

In this class you will learn the basics of black & white darkroom printing techniques such as how to properly mix chemistry, and ensure correct exposure, contrast, and tone. You will select your own negatives for printing, create test strips, and end up with a final print to be proud of.

Demystifying your Digital Camera

Today’s point and shoot cameras are packed with so many features, it‘s confusing to just about everyone. In this class, we’ll show you how to get the most out of your digital camera. Get tips for specific shooting situations and learn how to adjust for different lighting, how to control file sizes, how to deal with shutter lag, how to manage and print your pictures. Clear up the mysteries with our point and shoot specialist, Pat Kausgrill!

Getting the Most from Your DSLR 101
+ Saturday August 23rd, 12-2pm
+ Saturday Sept. 20th, 12-2pm

If you have a DSLR and suspect that you’re not getting all the power from it, this is the class for you. In this informal setting, you’ll learn how to unlock the creative potential and features hidden in your camera. Looking Glass staff members make it fun and easy.

Topics include advanced exposure and focus modes, using an on camera flash, how using the right lens effects your final results, controlling white balance, saturation, sharpness, and noise reduction, shooting JPEG vs RAW, using software to enhance your images, and how to back up and store your images. Bring your questions. Class size is limited to 8 students.

Getting the Most from Your DSLR 201

(one-day class)

In this class, you'll learn how to master the more advanced features of your DSLR, including manual camera controls, metering modes, ISO control and M, Tv, AV shooting, and more. You'll discover the pros and cons of shooting in different formats including RAW and TIF as well as get answers to the age-old question "What resolution should I shoot at?" Learn how, when, and why to change color spaces, white balance and more! Also covered: how to get more from your flash. Class size is limited to 8 students.

Intro to Photoshop CS/2/3
Four-session class: Mondays September 8, 15, 22, & 29th. class time: 6-8pm

Adobe Photoshop is the professional standard in desktop digital imaging. This class will concentrate on those features needed to edit your digital images. We will cover the basics for understanding Photoshop including: viewing and saving your files, resizing and cropping, and using the canvas. We will focus on understanding layers, image adjustments, using levels and curves, hue/saturation, color balance, black and white conversion, how to use the select and image editing tools to work on photographs, and more. Finally, we will discuss the importance of proper color management and workflow techniques. Although not a mandatory requirement, to get the most out of this class students should have a laptop computer with Photoshop installed. Assignments allow students to practice the tools and techniques learned in class.

Take Control Of Your Camera
Six-session class: Tuesday nights, 6-8pm
Sept., 9, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 28.

This six-session class is for photographers who have a Digital SLR or Compact Digital Camera, who wish to improve their photographic skills. We will explain camera functions, transferring, burning cds, digital accessories, and image file management. We will explain resolution and compression, investigate the creative aspects of digital photography, and will discuss the importance of obtaining correct exposure and how to use your camera's histogram to achieve this goal. Some other concepts and techniques covered will be shutter effects depth of field, and creative use of white balance and filters. The student will learn a clear and understandable approach to composing great photographs, and how to gain more control over the design of their pictures by subject placement, proper framing, and selecting a point of view. Photographic assignments and a field trip will allow the student to practice the tools and techniques learned in class. The destination of the field trip will be announced in class.

Intro to Color Management
Two 2-hour sessions
Thursday, September 18th & Thursday September 25th, 6pm - 8pm.

Intro to Color Management presents photographers with a practical understanding (v.s. color science theory) of the steps in the digital imaging "pipeline" to make color management work for you in your digital workflow. It is targeted to photographers who are new to color management, or need to improve their understanding of color management in the photographic workflow. The main focus is color management with Photoshop and Epson desktop printers like the R2400, although the principles can be applied to printing with Adobe Lightroom or other Adobe applications.
The class consists of two 2-hour sessions,. It is primarily lecture-based, with discussion some demonstration in the second week. A printed handbook is included. Class is limited to 6 students. Basic familiarity with Adobe Photoshop is recommended.


Specific areas covered will include:
- Digital imaging workflows (primarily Photoshop and the Epson inkjet printer, although other Adobe applications like Lightroom can be covered if there is interest)
- How to calibrate and profile your monitor using a colorimeter
- Understanding color spaces and color models
- The importance and use of ICC profiles
- Understanding color gamut and different rendering intents
- Using and obtaining icc printer profiles
- The importance of your viewing environment
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting color management problems
