Indelible portraits emerge when you combine critical photographic technical skills with sensitive communication. This three-part workshop helps you significantly improve your photographs of people, especially head and shoulders portraits using available light and simple artificial light sources.
Conducted by Oakland based photographer and longtime Looking Glass instructor Dave Strauss, this small workshop – limited to 10 students – teaches you to “art direct” your shots, carefully control your camera settings, and drastically improve your results.
Session 1: Thursday October 14, 5:30 – 7:00 PM on Zoom
Dave will spend 1½ highly interactive hours with you on Zoom. He’ll show you many examples of “bad” and “good” portraits, explaining why the bad ones don’t work and how to consistently capture the good ones. He’ll cover lighting, framing, equipment, camera settings, etc. Session 1 will end with the assignment of shooting exercises that will help you practice and internalize what you’ve learned.
Session 2: Saturday October 16, 10:00 – 11:30 AM Outdoor Shoot
Dave will meet with the class at Looking Glass (outside, in back of the store). Participants will shoot and pose for each other in a fun and extremely informative session. He’ll end the session by harvesting your photos from your camera’s memory cards for discussion during Session 3.
Session 3: Monday October 18, 5:30-6:30 PM on Zoom
The participants will gather again on Zoom to review and learn from your photos. Dave spends time on each image, exploring your intentions and discussing which aspects of your shots are working and which could be improved. Most attendees of Dave’s classes tell us that his review sessions are “the best part”; fun, fascinating, and packed with essential tips and techniques.
PREREQUISITES: This workshop is best suited for “intermediate and up” photographers who will be using DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. Questions? Ask any Looking Glass staff member.
NOTE ABOUT HEALTH & SAFETY: Due to the evolving nature of COVID-19 and the delta variant, we will require masks for the in-person portion of this class and ask that everyone remain respectful and conscientious with their personal space during the outdoor shoot for everyone’s safety. Please note that at times, students may play the role of “model” and have their mask removed. That noted, we require that all participants be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and we ask that you please bring your vaccination card for this session. (You can opt out of Session 2 and still participate in this workshop without vaccination if you shoot the exercises on your own and submit your exercise photos to Dave electronically prior to Session 3.)
CANCELLATION POLICY: We require 72-hour notice for a full refund of the class registration fee.
