This comprehensive online workshop runs in three parts according to following schedule: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00am to 12:30pm, July 20th, 22nd and 24th respectively, and is limited to 8 students.

With excellent image quality, portability, and easy images sharing, the smartphone has become a convenient picture taking device for many. And while you can get great snapshots with the native camera app, to unlock the its full potential, third-party apps excel at bringing out the most your smartphone’s camera can offer. The challenge is however, how do we choose which ones to use. This 3-part workshop will explore smartphone camera apps, with a primary focus on Adobe Lightroom for Smartphone. Using this app during the workshop, Reid Thaler (your instructor) will teach you techniques and settings to get consistently sharp images, and then how to optimize them with tone and color adjustments in the Adobe Lightroom for Smartphone app.  Whether you choose to subscribe to their premium service which offers extra features for $5/month or use the extended range of tools offered for free, you’ll gain more control for capturing a better images and optimizing them with its extensive toolset for bring out the most your image has to offer. PLEASE NOTE: to get the most from this workshop, having the paid version of Lightroom for Smartphone is recommended. Other Apps that will be discussed include Adobe Photoshop Fix, Google Street View, DMD Panorama, Snapseed, and Fore.  Most are free, or at most are only a couple of dollars each—less than a cup of coffee!

After we get comfortable with using our phone cameras and making image adjustments with Lightroom for Smartphone, we will concentrate on the most important aspect of photography, composition. You'll learn why good composition is more important than almost anything else in photography, and how it entices viewers to spend more time exploring your images.

And finally, we'll explore how you can easily get your images off your phone and backed up on your computer.

For this online course, we’ll be meeting up from the comfort of our own homes using the Zoom video meeting application. Desktop or laptop computers with big screens work best. Using a tablet, iPad, or (horrors!) a cell phone will not work for this workshop. We will also schedule a short Zoom orientation a day or two prior to the class for those that are new to Zoom or want a refresher. This will help us get started the day of the class efficiently, so we can jump right into the learning (as opposed to troubleshooting!).

In-between sessions, students will be given assignments to apply and practice what they just learned, in a practical way. The class will communicate through Google Classroom. He will review your assignments and answer your questions to help you get the most from this experience.

The workshop has been optimized for online instruction, to ensure we can learn while also staying safe. Below is an outline that covers the three parts that make up this workshop:

  • Monday, July 20th: Introduction to smartphone photography, Adobe Lightroom for Smartphone and its camera controls.  We will explore the app, set preferences, explore the camera shooting abilities, and learn how to navigate the app.
  • Wednesday, July 22nd: Learn how to optimize images with Lightroom’s extensive toolset. Learn to apply tone and color corrections and create presets to apply settings quickly. Learn other apps to capture panoramic images, emulate portrait mode if not available on your camera, and explore other fun and creative apps.
  • Friday, July 24th: Review images and give optimizing suggestions.  Discuss useful smartphone accessories. Learn to back up your images to your computer or cloud-based storage.
