Bright leaves catch the light while surrounding shadows become deep and cool. Backlighting can make colors glow, but it can also produce extreme contrast. Rich reds and yellows may look beautiful to the eye while exceeding what the camera can successfully record.

In this live online class, photographer and master printmaker Rich Seiling will use fall color as a practical setting for understanding exposure more clearly. He’ll introduce a repeatable approach to “exposing to the right,” designed to help you capture as much usable tonal information as your camera allows without losing important highlights.

Many photographers routinely underexpose their images by a stop or more without realizing it.
