A 3-session intermediate photography workshop with Dave Strauss
Your camera is smart. But you’re smarter.
This immersive three-part workshop is for photographers ready to take full creative control—and move beyond what the camera thinks you want.
Led by acclaimed photographer and longtime Looking Glass instructor Dave Strauss, this class will help you deepen your understanding of the photographic fundamentals and learn how to work with your camera’s intelligence to create the images you envision—even in tricky lighting or unconventional situations.
What You’ll Learn
Through presentations, discussions, hands-on practice, and image review, you’ll explore:
-
Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focus—not just what they are, but how to use them with intention
-
How to break free from auto mode while still benefiting from your camera’s advanced metering and scene analysis
-
Techniques for adapting to unpredictable or challenging real-world scenarios
-
How to translate your creative goals into in-camera decisions with confidence
This workshop is designed for intermediate photographers who want to build more control into their process, refine their results, and reconnect with the joy of making thoughtful photographs.

About the Teacher
Dave Strauss has been passionate about photography since childhood—beginning with a Kodak Brownie at age seven and later capturing evocative images during a world-spanning trip in the late 1960s. A lifelong learner, he studied art and design at UC Berkeley amidst the vibrant cultural shifts of the era, mastering everything from twin‑lens reflex and large‑format film to darkroom techniques. After a successful career in software and executive roles, Dave rekindled his love for photography with the digital revolution around 2000. Today, he brings over two decades of digital‑era experience to his teaching, specializing in workshops, studio portraits, wildlife, and scientific imaging. His lifelong pursuit of visual storytelling and deep technical proficiency make him a patient and inspiring guide for beginners seeking to gain creative control of their images.
