Timing:

This class runs in our classroom at 1045 Ashby Ave. in Berkeley.

Class Overview:

In this 3-hour workshop for intermediate photographers (but relatively new to flash), we’ll explore techniques for combining speedlight flash and ambient light to achieve independent exposure control of foreground and background, greatly expanding creative control while enhancing your understanding of digital cameras and “smart” flash. We’ll briefly review the fundamentals of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focus/depth-of-field, and then explore some techniques for getting just the light you want using mixed lighting. You will learn via a classroom lecture, slide presentation, live demonstrations, and camera-in-hand exercises. We’ll look carefully at both the instructor’s and participants’ images to discover the challenges we faced and how to resolve these challenges.

Conducted by Oakland based photographer and longtime Looking Glass instructor Dave Strauss, this small workshop – limited to 8 students – teaches you to “art direct” your shots, carefully control your camera settings and lighting, and dramatically improve your results.

Prerequisites:

This workshop is designed for photographers who know their way around their DSLRs or Mirrorless Cameras - cameras with interchangeable lenses - but are relatively new to using flash in their photography. You should know how to set aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to specific values on your camera even if you’re not quite sure which values to use. You will need a flash/speedlight, preferably with a trigger/transmitter enabling off-camera use.

(If you would like to take the class but need a new flash or trigger, come on by Looking Glass in advance of the class date and we’ll walk you through what’s best for you!)

Health & Safety:

Let’s protect each other! To attend this in-classroom workshop, you need to have a negative result from a self-test administered Covid test not more than 24 hours prior to the workshop. Questions? Send us a note using our Contact Form here.

Cancellations:

Looking Glass requires 72-hour notice of cancellation for a full refund.
