Date & Time:
Led by instructor Reid Thaler, this four to five hour class takes place on Saturday, March 22nd at 10:30am in the Looking Glass classroom. There will be a break for lunch. (Please note: lunch will NOT be provided, so you can either bring your lunch and eat in the classroom and ask questions of the instructor, or take the time to get out of the classroom.)
Class Details:
Come celebrate the natural world and learn to photograph close up where a flower becomes a world of its own. You'll learn the different methods of shooting macro photography, the costs, the trade offs one method offers over the others, as well as ways to address other challenges that shooting macro photography presents. Students will receive group and individual support with time split between learning the tools and techniques of macro photography and shooting in the field (the area/streets around Looking Glass Photo). Please bring a camera that can focus to within a few inches of the lens (DSLRs are great with a macro lens, extension tube, or other close up lenses; most point and shoot cameras have a built-in macro function; even a smartphone is suitable to shoot macro!), a tripod, preferably one that can be extended to lay close to the ground, and patience to explore, practice, and play. If available, bring a laptop with your favorite image editing program. Here’s what you’ll explore in this immersive class/workshop:
You should have a basic understanding of your camera's menus, how to navigate them and know how to set basic functions.
We require 72-hour notice for a full refund of the class registration fee.
Reid began photographing his dog when he was 9 with a Kodak Brownie camera. From there, he graduated, with his dad’s instruction, to a Kodak Retina I (c. 1939), a light meter, and a darkroom. His experience is varied from shooting portraits, exploring the intimate world of macro photography, to teaching pinhole camera construction at a camp for the blind.
He teaches photography and digital image processing throughout the Bay Area including the College of Marin, Santa Rosa Junior College, Samy’s Camera in San Francisco, Looking Glass Photo and Camera in Berkeley, and the City of Walnut Creek Civic Arts Education program.
