A 609mm-Equivalent View

On a Fujifilm X Series camera, the 400mm focal length provides the same angle of view as a 609mm lens on full frame. That reach allows photographers to fill the frame with distant wildlife, isolate birds against uncluttered backgrounds, or capture sports and motorsports from well outside the action.

The F4.5 maximum aperture supports faster shutter speeds without requiring ISO settings as high as slower telephoto zooms. It also produces smooth background separation that helps subjects stand out clearly from their surroundings.

High-Resolution Optical Design

Fast, Quiet Linear-Motor Autofocus

A high-speed linear motor drives the internal focusing group, providing fast, accurate, and nearly silent autofocus. Internal focusing also means the lens does not change length as focus moves, preserving its balance and making it easier to follow moving subjects.

A focus limiter can restrict the focusing range to subjects beyond 5 meters, reducing unnecessary focus travel when photographing distant wildlife, aircraft, or sports.

The lens also includes a focus preset function. Pressing the SET button records a chosen focus distance, allowing the lens to return to that position quickly when a subject revisits a predictable location. A Focus Control Button near the front of the barrel provides convenient access to AF-L, PRESET, or AF functions selected with the Focus Select Switch.

5.5-Stop Optical Image Stabilization

The built-in optical stabilization system provides up to 5.5 stops of correction. This helps maintain a stable viewfinder image and reduces the effects of camera shake when working handheld at an effective 609mm field of view.

Stabilization is especially valuable while waiting for wildlife, following erratic movement, or working in locations where a tripod would be difficult to position. It can also help when photographing stationary subjects at slower shutter speeds, although fast-moving subjects will still require an appropriately fast shutter speed.

Extend Your Reach

The XF 400mm F4.5 is compatible with Fujifilm’s optional XF teleconverters:

• With the XF1.4X TC WR: 560mm F6.3, equivalent to approximately 853mm

• With the XF2X TC WR: 800mm F9, equivalent to approximately 1,219mm

This makes it possible to carry one prime lens and adapt its reach for smaller or more distant subjects. As with any teleconverter, the added magnification comes with a reduction in maximum aperture.

Built for Demanding Conditions

The lens barrel includes 20 weather-sealing points to resist dust and moisture. It is designed to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F, or -10°C, making it suitable for early mornings, changing weather, and colder outdoor environments.

A fluorine coating on the front element repels water and helps prevent fingerprints and other contaminants from sticking to the glass. The included tripod collar foot provides a stable mounting point for tripod and monopod use, while the supplied shoulder strap gives photographers another way to carry the lens in the field.
