About This Class
Fall color can be wonderfully expressive, but it can also present some difficult exposure decisions. Bright leaves catch the light while surrounding shadows become deep and cool. Backlighting can make colors glow, but it can also produce extreme contrast. Rich reds and yellows may look beautiful to the eye while exceeding what the camera can successfully record.
In this live online class, photographer and master printmaker Rich Seiling will use fall color as a practical setting for understanding exposure more clearly. He’ll introduce a repeatable approach to “exposing to the right,” designed to help you capture as much usable tonal information as your camera allows without losing important highlights.
Many photographers routinely underexpose their images by a stop or more without realizing it. The result can be lost shadow detail, increased noise, diminished color, and files that require more work during editing. Rich will show you how to evaluate exposure with greater confidence and work toward consistent results in one-third-stop increments.
Although fall color provides the visual focus for the class, the exposure principles Rich teaches can be applied throughout the year and across many kinds of photography.

Meet Your Instructor
Rich Seiling is a photographer, educator, and master printmaker whose career has been shaped by a lifelong study of light, landscape, and the photographic print.
After beginning his photographic education in the darkroom, Rich explored digital photography and printmaking in the early 1990s. He went on to co-found West Coast Imaging, where he helped develop museum-quality digital printing methods and worked with photographers including Michael Forsberg, Galen Rowell, Jack Dykinga, and Robert Glenn Ketchum. His team has produced prints for museum exhibitions and leading galleries and completed prepress work for art books published by Taschen, Houghton Mifflin, and others.
Rich’s streamlined Photoshop workflow has been tested through the production of tens of thousands of fine-art prints and taught to photographers throughout the country. Working in both color and black and white, he creates vibrant, expressive photographs rooted in careful observation and a deep understanding of light.
As an instructor, Rich helps photographers gain control of their craft, strengthen their visual awareness, and discover the stories that are uniquely theirs to tell.
