The OM SYSTEM PEN was designed around the freedom of interchangeable lenses, and this kit puts that idea to work immediately. The compact 14–42mm zoom handles everyday photography, while the lightweight 40–150mm telephoto brings distant subjects closer. Together, they provide an exceptionally useful 28–300mm-equivalent range for travel, people, landscapes, wildlife, events, and the unexpected moments in between.

• Five-axis image stabilization: Up to 5.5 stops of in-body stabilization helps keep handheld photographs sharp and works with both included lenses, as well as other compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses.

• Dedicated Color and Monochrome controls: Four customizable color profiles and four monochrome profiles let you shape color, contrast, grain, highlights, and shadows while making the photograph. Profiles can also be saved and shared through the OM Image Share app.

• Capable autofocus and computational tools: A 121-point all-cross-type phase-detection system recognizes people, cats, and dogs. High Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking, HDR, Multiple Exposure, Starry Sky AF, and Pro Capture expand what you can create inside the camera.

The Looking Glass Take

For a first serious camera or a remarkably small travel system, this may be the most complete PEN kit. The 14–42mm can remain on the camera for everyday photography, while the 40–150mm adds enough reach to photograph animals, performances, sports, architectural details, and moments that cannot be approached physically.

The telephoto lens is where the compact Micro Four Thirds system makes an especially persuasive argument. An 80–300mm-equivalent lens would often be one of the larger pieces in another camera system. Here, it weighs less than seven ounces and can slip into a small space in your bag until you need it.

Neither lens is designed to produce the shallowest possible depth of field or gather the most light. Instead, they prioritize useful range, low weight, and accessibility. If you later discover that you prefer low-light photography, stronger background separation, or the simplicity of one focal length, add a compact 17mm, 25mm, or 45mm prime.

That is the real appeal of this kit. You can begin with nearly everything from wide angle to telephoto without committing permanently to any one way of seeing. The camera remains compact, but your photography has room to wander.

Good to know: The 14–42mm lens retracts for storage and must be extended before photographing. The PEN body and 14–42mm lens offer IPX1-rated dust- and splash-resistant construction, but the included 40–150mm R lens is not weather sealed. Both lenses have variable maximum apertures and are best suited to daylight, travel, and general photography; a brighter prime lens is a better addition for frequent low-light work or pronounced background blur. The PEN has no built-in flash, uses one UHS-I SD memory card, and records 8-bit DCI 4K video at 24p or UHD 4K at up to 30p.
