Looking Glass Photo's very own, David, has created something magical for you this holiday season. These are photographs that David took, then personally printed on special Japanese paper and finished with archival spray to ensure longevity. He then cuts them down into squares and folds them into wonderful origami sculptures. Each one is unique and handcrafted by the artist. And as with most art, these are embodied with not only a great deal of thought and care, but also imbued with meaning.
Paper crane symbolism: The paper crane is a symbol of peace, love, and hope, and healing during challenging times. In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years. As a result, in the Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture, the crane represents good fortune and longevity. The Japanese refer to the crane as the “bird of happiness”. The wings of the crane were believed to carry souls up to paradise. In Japanese folklore, it’s alleged that a person can be granted one wish if they fold 1,000 origami cranes (this practice is called senbazuru in Japanese).
