Looking Glass Advantage

Serious 600mm reach without the usual size and weight.

The Sony FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS brings true super-telephoto reach to a remarkably portable G Master prime. Weighing just 2.2 pounds without its tripod mount, it is designed for photographers who want to follow birds, wildlife, sports, and other distant subjects without carrying a traditional heavyweight 600mm lens.

Its advanced optical design delivers fine detail, strong contrast, and smooth background separation, while fast autofocus and built-in Optical SteadyShot help keep moving subjects sharp. Compatibility with Sony’s optional teleconverters extends its reach to 840mm or 1200mm when the subject is even farther away.

The Looking Glass Take

The real story here is not simply that Sony made another sharp 600mm lens. It is that Sony made a 600mm G Master prime that weighs less than one kilogram and can realistically be carried and used handheld for long stretches.

That makes it especially appealing for bird and wildlife photographers who hike, travel, or spend hours searching for subjects. The fixed 600mm focal length is less flexible than a zoom, and the f/6.3 aperture may require higher ISO settings in low light, but those are sensible tradeoffs for this much reach in such a compact package. If you regularly work at the long end of a telephoto zoom and want better portability, autofocus performance, and G Master image quality, this lens deserves a close look.

Lightweight 600mm Reach

At only 995 grams, or 35.1 ounces, the FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS is unusually light for a full-frame 600mm prime. Its center of gravity is positioned closer to the camera body, helping the lens feel balanced while tracking birds in flight, panning with athletes, or holding a composition for an extended period.

The lens measures approximately 10.4 inches long and focuses internally, so its length and balance remain consistent as focus changes.

G Master Detail and Bokeh

Three Super ED elements and one ED element help control chromatic aberration and preserve fine detail from the center of the frame to the edges. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and ghosting, helping the lens maintain clarity and contrast when photographing backlit wildlife or working in difficult outdoor light.

An 11-blade circular aperture and carefully controlled spherical aberration produce smooth, natural-looking bokeh that helps isolate subjects against distant backgrounds.

Fast, Precise Autofocus

Two XD Linear Motors provide fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus with responsive subject tracking. The lens is designed to keep pace with fast-moving birds, wildlife, and sports, including continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second with the Sony α9 III.

Full-time DMF allows immediate manual focus adjustment, while a focus-range limiter can help the camera acquire distant subjects more quickly.

Optical SteadyShot Stabilization

Built-in Optical SteadyShot helps reduce camera shake and maintain a stable viewfinder image at 600mm. Multiple stabilization modes support general handheld shooting and panning, while compatible Sony camera bodies can coordinate in-body and lens stabilization for improved performance.

Extend Your Reach

The lens is compatible with Sony’s optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters:

  • With the 1.4x teleconverter: 840mm f/9
  • With the 2.0x teleconverter: 1200mm f/13

On an APS-C Sony camera, the lens provides a field of view equivalent to 900mm on full frame before adding a teleconverter.

Designed for Field Use

Four customizable focus-hold buttons provide easy access in horizontal or vertical shooting orientations. A customizable function ring can control features such as APS-C/Full-Frame switching, Preset Focus, or Power Focus on compatible cameras.

The lens also includes dedicated controls for focus mode, Full-time DMF, focus range, and Optical SteadyShot operation. Its dust- and moisture-resistant construction is suited to outdoor use, while a fluorine-coated front element helps resist fingerprints, moisture, and debris.
