Sony FX5 Cinema Camera

The Sony FX5 brings serious cinema-camera capability into a remarkably compact, modular body. Built around a newly developed 5K full-frame stacked sensor, it combines internal RAW recording, Open Gate capture, wide dynamic range, advanced monitoring tools, dependable autofocus, and in-body stabilization in a camera that remains small enough for handheld work, gimbals, travel, and compact production rigs.

This is a camera for filmmakers who have outgrown the limitations of a conventional mirrorless body but do not want to give up mobility. The FX5 can work as a streamlined one-person camera for documentaries, interviews, events, branded content, and independent films, or it can be built into a more complete production system with professional audio, external monitoring, timecode, networking, and rigging accessories.

A New 5K Full-Frame Cinema Sensor

At the center of the FX5 is a 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor. Its fast readout supports detailed high-resolution capture, high-frame-rate recording, and more controlled rendering of motion, while the full-frame format provides the depth, dimensionality, and low-light performance filmmakers expect from a modern cinema camera.

Full-frame 3:2 Open Gate recording uses a larger portion of the sensor than conventional 16:9 capture. This gives editors more room to reframe, stabilize, create multiple aspect ratios, or produce horizontal and vertical versions from the same footage. It is especially valuable for anamorphic production, visual-effects work, and projects that must be delivered across several platforms.

Internal X-OCN RAW Recording

The FX5 can record Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN compressed RAW format internally, eliminating the need to add an external RAW recorder to the rig. X-OCN LT, C1, and C2 options allow productions to balance image quality, recording time, storage requirements, and post-production flexibility.

For filmmakers who want the latitude of RAW without turning a compact camera into a complicated external-recording setup, this is one of the FX5’s most significant advantages. Wide Latitude and Three Base ISO Settings

The FX5 provides more than 15 stops of latitude when recording in S-Log3, helping preserve detail in bright highlights and deep shadows. This is particularly useful for uncontrolled locations, interiors with bright windows, outdoor documentary work, and other scenes where lighting conditions cannot be perfectly balanced.

Three Base ISO settings—ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800—give filmmakers more control over noise and dynamic range as lighting conditions change. Instead of treating low-light capability as an emergency setting, the FX5 is designed to move confidently between daylight, interior, and genuinely dark environments while maintaining cleaner shadows and more natural tonal transitions.

S-Cinetone is also available for productions that need polished color, natural skin tones, and an attractive image with little or no grading.

Intelligent Autofocus You Can Use Professionally

Sony’s BIONZ XR2 processor includes dedicated AI-based subject-recognition capabilities. The FX5 can recognize and track people, animals, and birds, with Real-time Eye AF and up to 759 phase-detection autofocus points.

For interviews, documentaries, events, wildlife, gimbal work, and other situations where a dedicated focus puller may not be available, this can make the difference between merely having autofocus and having autofocus that can be trusted as part of a professional workflow.

Focus-transition speed, subject-shift sensitivity, touch tracking, Focus Map, and AF Assist provide additional control over how the camera acquires and follows a subject.

Designed for Handheld and Mobile Production

Despite its cinema-oriented feature set, the FX5 body weighs approximately 1.4 pounds before adding a battery, memory card, lens, or accessories. Its flat-top design, secure handgrip, and multiple mounting points make it equally suitable for stripped-down handheld shooting or a fully built production rig.

Five-axis in-body image stabilization helps reduce movement during handheld operation. Active and Dynamic Active stabilization modes provide additional electronic correction when a smoother result is more important than retaining the camera’s full angle of view. Stabilization metadata can also be recorded for additional correction in compatible post-production software.

The result is a camera that can move easily between tripod, handheld, vehicle, gimbal, and compact documentary configurations.

Cinema-Focused Monitoring and Operation

The FX5 is designed around motion-picture production rather than adapting still-camera controls for video. Its BIG6 home screen places frame rate, exposure index or ISO, shutter, iris, LUT, and white balance together for quick access.

Flexible Recording and Production Workflows

Two combination media slots accept either CFexpress Type A or SDXC cards. Productions can configure the slots for simultaneous backup, relay recording, separated recording, or independent main and proxy files.

The FX5 also includes full-size HDMI, timecode support, USB-C connectivity, a 2.5-gigabit Ethernet port, and built-in Wi-Fi for remote operation, file transfer, streaming, and networked production workflows.

An active cooling system is designed to support extended recording, while the sealed body construction helps improve reliability when working in demanding locations.

The FX5 is not simply a small camera with an unusually long list of video specifications. Its real strength is how many legitimate cinema-production tools Sony has made available without forcing the filmmaker into a large, heavy, or permanently built-out system.

Open Gate recording gives editors more freedom. Internal X-OCN provides a serious RAW workflow without an external recorder. The three Base ISO settings make the camera adaptable across dramatically different lighting conditions. Meanwhile, autofocus, stabilization, and the compact body make those capabilities practical for small crews and individual operators.
