Sony FX5 Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit

The Sony FX5 combines high-end cinema image quality, internal RAW recording, advanced autofocus, professional monitoring tools, and production-ready audio in a compact camera built for filmmakers who need to move quickly.

At its center is a newly developed 5K full-frame stacked sensor capable of recording detailed, cinematic footage with wide dynamic range and low noise. Full-frame Open Gate capture, internal X-OCN RAW, three Base ISO settings, five-axis stabilization, and AI-powered subject recognition give filmmakers substantial creative and technical control without requiring a large camera body or external recorder.

This configuration includes Sony’s XLR-H2 Handle Unit, adding two professional XLR/TRS audio inputs, four-channel recording, 32-bit float audio, physical audio controls, additional accessory mounting points, and a comfortable top handle. It turns the FX5 into a more complete production camera for interviews, documentaries, commercial work, events, independent films, and small-crew productions.

A New 5K Full-Frame Cinema Sensor

The FX5 is built around a 16.6-megapixel full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor. Its fast readout supports high-resolution and high-frame-rate recording while helping produce more controlled motion rendering and reduced image distortion when subjects or the camera are moving quickly.

The full-frame sensor also provides the depth, dimensionality, low-light performance, and lens flexibility filmmakers expect from a modern cinema system. The camera can record 5K footage at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second, and Full HD at up to 240 frames per second.

Full-Frame Open Gate Recording

Open Gate recording uses the full 3:2 imaging area of the sensor rather than cropping immediately to a conventional 16:9 frame. This provides additional image area above and below the final frame, giving editors more freedom to recompose, stabilize, straighten, or create multiple deliverables from the same footage.

A single Open Gate recording can provide greater flexibility when producing traditional horizontal video, vertical social content, square crops, or alternate cinematic aspect ratios. It is also especially useful for anamorphic production and visual-effects workflows.

At launch, the FX5’s full-frame Open Gate recording is available when shooting in Sony’s X-OCN RAW format. The camera also provides 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm scan modes for different lenses and production requirements.

Internal X-OCN RAW Recording

The FX5 is the first camera in Sony’s compact FX series to record X-OCN internally. X-OCN is Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, designed to preserve extensive tonal and color information while keeping file sizes more manageable than many traditional uncompressed RAW workflows.

X-OCN LT, C1, and C2 recording options allow filmmakers to balance image quality, recording duration, storage requirements, and post-production performance. Because recording happens inside the camera, filmmakers can retain a compact handheld or gimbal configuration without adding an external RAW recorder.

The FX5 also offers XAVC recording formats for productions that prioritize smaller files, faster turnaround, or a more conventional editing workflow.

Wide Latitude and Three Base ISO Settings

The FX5 captures more than 15 stops of latitude in S-Log3, helping preserve information in both bright highlights and deep shadows. This is particularly valuable when filming uncontrolled locations, interiors with bright windows, outdoor scenes, stage performances, and other environments where the lighting cannot be perfectly balanced.

Three selectable Base ISO settings—ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800—allow the camera to operate effectively across daylight, interior, and genuinely low-light conditions. Instead of relying on one native sensitivity range, filmmakers can choose a more appropriate foundation for the scene while controlling noise and protecting dynamic range.

The FX5 also introduces Dual Gain Shooting to the FX series, helping improve gradation, latitude, and shadow detail in compatible recording settings.

Professional 32-Bit Float Audio

The included XLR-H2 Handle Unit adds two XLR/TRS combination inputs and supports up to four channels of audio recording. This allows filmmakers to record several microphones independently, create safety channels at different levels, or separate dialogue, ambient sound, and reference audio for greater control in post-production.

The handle can record audio at up to 96 kHz and 32-bit float. Its dual analog-to-digital converters capture the same source at different gain levels, preserving a wide range from very quiet sound to sudden loud peaks. This greatly reduces the risk of permanently clipped audio and lessens the need to set recording gain with absolute precision before every take.

Physical gain dials, overload indicators, low-cut filters, attenuator controls, and flexible channel assignments give sound recordists and camera operators direct control without navigating through camera menus.

A Cable-Free Audio Connection

The XLR-H2 attaches directly to the FX5 through Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe. Power and digital audio are carried through the camera connection, so the handle does not require its own battery or a separate audio cable running into the camera.

This creates a cleaner, more secure rig and avoids an additional analog conversion stage between the microphones and the recorded file. The handle also includes a 3.5mm stereo input, allowing different microphone types to be incorporated into a four-channel audio configuration.

A Functional Top Handle for Mobile Production

The XLR-H2 is more than an audio adapter. Its extended grip makes the FX5 easier to carry and provides a practical handling position for low-angle shooting, moving handheld work, and transitions between setups.

Three anti-rotation threaded mounting points allow monitors, wireless receivers, lights, microphone mounts, and other accessories to be attached securely. An additional mounting point can accommodate a cold shoe, making it easier to build a production-ready camera without immediately adding a full cage.

Intelligent Autofocus for Real Productions

Sony’s BIONZ XR2 processor includes a dedicated AI processing unit for subject recognition and autofocus. Human pose estimation analyzes a subject’s eyes, head, and body, helping maintain focus even when the face is partially hidden or the subject turns away from the camera.

Real-time Tracking can follow a selected subject through the frame, while detailed transition-speed and subject-shift settings allow autofocus behavior to be adapted to the scene.

This makes the FX5 especially capable for documentary work, interviews, events, wildlife, gimbal operation, and other situations where an individual filmmaker or small crew may not have a dedicated focus puller.

Improved Automatic White Balance

Auto Tracing White Balance combines information from the camera’s visible-light and infrared sensors with AI-based light-source estimation. This helps the FX5 respond more naturally and consistently when subjects move between daylight, shade, interiors, mixed lighting, or changing event environments.

For productions where the camera must react quickly, this can reduce distracting color shifts without preventing the operator from using fully manual white-balance settings when precise control is required.

Five-Axis Image Stabilization

Five-axis in-body image stabilization helps control camera movement during handheld shooting. Sony has expanded the roll-correction range compared with the FX3, helping suppress the rotational movement that can be particularly visible during walking shots or when working with longer lenses.

Active Mode provides additional electronic stabilization, while Dynamic Active Mode applies stronger correction for more demanding handheld movement. Stabilization metadata can also support more precise correction in compatible Sony post-production software.

This gives filmmakers several ways to balance stability, angle of view, and post-production flexibility based on the needs of each shot.

Cinema-Focused Monitoring and Controls

The FX5 is designed around motion-picture production rather than treating video as an additional still-camera mode. Its BIG6 home screen brings frame rate, exposure, shutter, iris, LUT, and white-balance controls together for faster adjustments on set.

Built-in monitoring tools include waveform display, False Color, histogram, focus assistance, and support for user-imported LUTs. Anamorphic de-squeeze settings are available for 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x lenses, allowing operators to monitor a correctly proportioned image while shooting.

The 3.5-inch, approximately 2.76-million-dot touchscreen uses a four-axis multi-angle design. It can be repositioned for handheld, tripod, low-angle, gimbal, and self-operated shooting while keeping important shooting information around the image rather than directly over it.

Compact, Modular, and Built to Expand

The FX5 body weighs approximately 1.4 pounds before adding the battery, memory card, handle, lens, or other accessories. Multiple threaded mounting points allow accessories to be attached directly to the body, helping filmmakers keep the camera minimal or build it into a more complete production system.

A high-efficiency cooling fan and optimized heat-dissipation system support extended recording. Dual combination card slots accept either CFexpress Type A or SDXC media, allowing filmmakers to configure simultaneous backup, relay recording, or separate main and proxy files.

The camera also provides full-size HDMI, timecode connectivity, USB-C, Ethernet, built-in Wi-Fi, remote monitoring, file transfer, and network-streaming support.
