The Sony RX10 V is the kind of camera that makes a very specific promise: one camera, one lens, and an enormous range of possibilities.

Built around a 20.1MP 1-inch stacked Exmor RS sensor and a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24–600mm f/2.4–4 zoom lens, the RX10 V is made for photographers who want serious reach without building an entire bag around it. It can shoot wide landscapes, travel scenes, portraits, school sports, birds, wildlife, close-up details, and distant subjects, all without changing lenses.

That is the real magic here. The RX10 V is not trying to replace every interchangeable-lens camera. It is trying to be the camera you actually bring when you do not want to carry a camera body, a wide zoom, a telephoto zoom, a super-telephoto lens, extra batteries, and a heavier bag. For travel, birding, family events, hiking, nature walks, and everyday photography, that can be a very compelling thing.

Why photographers love the Sony RX10 V

The 24–600mm equivalent zoom range is the heart of the RX10 V. At the wide end, it is useful for landscapes, city scenes, interiors, and travel photography. At the long end, it reaches into the world of birds, wildlife, sports, planes, performances, and subjects you simply cannot walk closer to. It gives you a huge amount of flexibility in one weather-resistant body.

Sony has also brought the RX10 line much closer to its Alpha mirrorless cameras. The RX10 V adds AI-powered Real-time Recognition autofocus for people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes, along with up to 30 fps blackout-free continuous shooting. For moving subjects, that matters. Birds do not wait. Kids do not pause mid-game. Wildlife rarely gives you a second chance. The RX10 V is designed to help you react quickly and keep your subject in focus.

The handling has been updated too, with a more Alpha-like grip, control layout, joystick, improved electronic viewfinder, and the larger NP-FZ100 battery. That gives the camera a more serious, confident feel in the hand, especially for anyone already familiar with Sony’s mirrorless system.

Video shooters get a much more capable hybrid camera as well. The RX10 V records 4K up to 120p, offers S-Cinetone and S-Log3, supports LUT workflows, includes Active Mode stabilization, and can livestream up to 4K/30p over USB-C. For travel creators, nature shooters, educators, and anyone who wants strong stills and video in one camera, this is a meaningful upgrade.

Tradeoffs to know

The RX10 V is powerful, but it is not magic. It uses a 1-inch sensor, which gives it real advantages over smaller-sensor superzoom cameras, but it still will not match the image quality, low-light performance, or background separation of a larger APS-C or full-frame camera with a dedicated telephoto lens.

The lens is also a power zoom rather than a traditional manual zoom lens. For some photographers, especially those coming from interchangeable-lens cameras, that may feel less direct. It also takes a moment to power on and extend the lens, so this is not quite the same experience as grabbing a mirrorless camera that is already ready with a lens attached.

And while the RX10 V is much smaller than a full-frame body with a 600mm lens, it is not a pocket camera. Think of it as a compact all-in-one wildlife, travel, and sports setup, not a tiny point-and-shoot.

Looking Glass tip

The RX10 V makes the most sense for someone who values flexibility, reach, and simplicity. If you want the absolute best image quality for serious wildlife work, a mirrorless body with a dedicated telephoto lens will still have the edge. But if you want one camera that can go from 24mm to 600mm, shoot fast, focus intelligently, and keep your bag light, the RX10 V is one of the most useful cameras in Sony’s lineup.

It is especially worth considering for travel, birding walks, safaris, family trips, outdoor events, and anyone who has ever looked at a big telephoto setup and thought, “I want the reach, but not the weight.”
