Description

Led by Jen Waicukauski
Two days of exploring and photographing, one day of reviewing, editing and printing

There’s a rhythm to early autumn in Pt. Reyes—the tule elk are in peak rut, their bugling rolling across the ridges as bulls gather harems and clash antlers. Raptors glide on coastal thermals, while shorebirds forage along tidal flats. The days are long, the air is crisp, and the light shifts golden across the hills. It’s a season rich with drama and possibility—perfect for photography.

Join Jen Waicukauski—photographer, educator, certified California Naturalist, and 2024 Audubon Top 100 Photographer—for a small-group experience (limited to just 4 participants) that blends field exploration with creative mentorship.

This isn’t just a workshop—it’s a deep dive into the art of seeing, the practice of patience, and the joy of capturing fleeting moments in nature.

Workshop Flow

Pre-Workshop Zoom Meetup
A few days before our adventure, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 24th, we’ll gather online to meet one another, review gear and logistics, and set intentions for the days ahead.

Day 1 & Day 2 – Pt. Reyes in the Field
From sunrise to sunset, we’ll immerse ourselves in the living landscape of Pt. Reyes. Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, we may find ourselves:

  • Photographing tule elk during peak rutting season, listening to their bugling calls, powerful postures, and sparring matches.

  • Watching for peregrine falcons, kestrels, and northern harriers as they hunt the open skies.

  • Exploring tidal flats alive with shorebirds in migration, learning to anticipate flight and capture movement.

  • Noticing signs of wildlife such as coyotes or river otters, sharpening our skills in reading the land for possibility.

Along the way, Jen will guide you in:

  • Seeing and using natural light in wild settings.

  • Approaching wildlife ethically and unobtrusively.

  • Mastering technical skills in the field (composition, exposure, focusing).

  • Finding your creative voice as you respond to nature’s unpredictability.

Day 3 – Image Review & Printing at Looking Glass
Back in Berkeley, we’ll shift indoors to review, refine, and share the stories we’ve captured. Together we’ll:

  • Cull and edit images with one-on-one support.

  • Explore creative expression through post-processing.

  • Learn how subtle choices in editing can elevate your work.

  • Make at least one print to take home—a tangible piece of the journey.

What You’ll Need

  • An interchangeable lens camera and telephoto lens (macro lens optional for close-up play).

  • A laptop with your editing software of choice (Jen demos with Adobe).

  • A solid understanding of manual camera controls: ISO, aperture, shutter speed.(Looking Glass offers rentals if you need gear support.)

Why Join?

With only four participants, you’ll have space to ask, practice, and grow. You’ll learn not just where to point your lens, but how to approach wildlife photography as a dialogue with place—patient, respectful, and deeply rewarding.

By the end, you’ll leave with new skills, a stronger creative voice, and prints in hand that remind you of the wild beauty of Pt. Reyes in autumn.
