Looking Glass Advantage

A remarkably compact constant-f/2.8 zoom that covers the focal lengths most photographers use every day, without turning a Fujifilm camera into a bulky kit.

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras and gives Fujifilm X shooters an equivalent field of view of approximately 27-75mm. That range moves comfortably from wide environmental photographs and travel scenes through everyday documentary work and into short-telephoto portraits, making it an excellent one-lens solution for photographers who want to keep their setup simple.

The real advantage is that Sigma manages to combine that useful range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. You keep the same bright aperture from 18mm through 50mm, giving you more flexibility in lower light and greater control over depth of field than a typical variable-aperture kit zoom.

Small Enough to Actually Carry

Fast zoom lenses are often large, but this one is unusually compact. The Fujifilm X-mount version measures just 76.8mm long and weighs approximately 285g, making it a natural match for the portability of the X system.

That makes a real difference in everyday use. Mounted on a Fujifilm body, it is light enough for travel, street photography, family outings, hiking, and all-day shooting without giving up the convenience of a bright standard zoom.

Fast, Quiet Autofocus

Sigma uses a stepping motor for autofocus, providing quick and quiet focusing for still photography and video. The X-mount version was specifically optimized for communication with Fujifilm cameras and supports AF-C as well as in-camera aberration correction on compatible bodies. The mount also incorporates a rubber seal for added protection against dust and moisture at the camera connection.

Surprisingly Good Up Close

One of the lens's less obvious strengths is close focusing. At 18mm, it can focus as close as 12.1cm and reaches a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2.8, allowing surprisingly dramatic close-up photographs of food, flowers, details, small objects, and everyday subjects.

It is not a dedicated macro lens, but it gives you considerably more close-up flexibility than you might expect from an everyday standard zoom.

The Looking Glass Take

This is one of those lenses that makes a Fujifilm kit easier.

The 18-50mm range covers an enormous amount of everyday photography, but the constant f/2.8 aperture is what separates it from the ordinary kit zoom. You can photograph indoors without immediately reaching for extremely high ISO settings, create more separation between your subject and background, and move from wide scenes to portraits without changing lenses.

What we especially like is that Sigma did not accomplish that by making the lens enormous. At only about 10 ounces, it preserves much of what makes an APS-C Fujifilm camera appealing in the first place.

For someone building a first Fujifilm system, replacing a slower kit zoom, traveling with one lens, or simply trying to keep a capable camera with them more often, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is an unusually strong combination of size, speed, versatility, and value.
